Power Transformer: Technical Overview for High Voltage Transmission Systems

A power transformer is a high-capacity electrical device used to transfer electrical energy between different voltage levels in transmission and distribution networks. It is typically installed in utility substations, power generation plants, industrial high-voltage systems, and large-scale energy infrastructure. Unlike distribution transformers, power transformers are designed to operate at or near full load for extended periods, making efficiency, thermal stability, and insulation reliability critical design considerations. Power transformers are commonly oil immersed, using insulating oil for both dielectric insulation and heat dissipation. The oil absorbs heat generated by core and winding losses and transfers it through radiators or cooling systems. Cooling methods include ONAN, ONAF, OFAF, and ODAF, selected according to transformer capacity and operating conditions. Large power transformers may also incorporate forced oil circulation, directed oil flow, or fan-assisted cooling to manage temperature rise under heavy load. The main components include a laminated steel core, copper or aluminum windings, insulating oil, a sealed tank, conservator, Buchholz relay, pressure relief device, tap changer, bushings, and temperature monitoring instruments. Tap changers allow voltage regulation to maintain stable output under varying grid conditions. On-load tap changers enable adjustment without interrupting power supply, while off-load tap changers require de-energization before adjustment. Key technical parameters include rated power, primary and secondary voltage, frequency, impedance, vector group, insulation level, no-load loss, load loss, sound level, and short-circuit withstand capability. Proper specification requires analysis of system voltage, fault level, load profile, harmonics, ambient conditions, and grid connection requirements. Routine maintenance should include oil testing, dissolved gas analysis, insulation resistance measurement, tap changer inspection, and cooling system verification. When correctly designed and maintained, a power transformer provides reliable voltage transformation for high-voltage electrical transmission networks.
