Technical Overview of Oil‑Immersed Transformer Technology

The oil‑immersed transformer is a fundamental component in electrical power transmission and distribution networks, distinguished by its use of insulating oil as both a coolant and a dielectric medium. The core and windings of the unit are completely submerged in a specialized tank filled with mineral oil or synthetic esters. This design is critical for thermal management; as the transformer operates, heat generated by core and copper losses is transferred to the oil. Through natural convection or forced circulation, the heated oil flows to radiators or cooling fins, dissipating heat into the atmosphere before recirculating.

Beyond cooling, the oil provides essential electrical insulation between live components and the grounded tank. This allows for a more compact design compared to air-cooled alternatives, particularly at higher voltage levels (typically above 33kV). The hermetically sealed construction of a modern oil‑immersed transformer protects the internal windings from moisture, dust, and corrosive atmospheric elements, significantly extending the operational lifespan of the cellulose insulation paper.

Safety and monitoring are integrated through accessories such as Buchholz relays, which detect internal faults by monitoring gas accumulation, and pressure relief devices. While they require periodic maintenance such as oil filtration and dielectric strength testing, oil‑immersed transformer units remain the standard for outdoor substations and heavy industrial applications due to their superior overload capacity and cost-effectiveness in high-voltage scenarios.
