Transformer Tank: Technical Overview for Oil-Immersed Transformer Structures

A transformer tank is the main structural enclosure of an oil-immersed transformer, designed to contain the core, windings, insulating oil, and internal components while providing mechanical protection, sealing, and thermal support. The tank serves as both a protective housing and a structural base for mounting radiators, conservators, bushings, valves, and monitoring devices. Transformer tanks are typically manufactured from carbon steel plates and designed to withstand internal oil pressure, mechanical loads, transportation forces, and short-circuit stresses. Common structural forms include corrugated wall tanks, fin-type tanks, and smooth-wall tanks with external cooling radiators. Corrugated tanks can accommodate oil volume changes caused by temperature variation, reducing the need for a separate conservator in some distribution transformer designs. The tank must maintain reliable sealing to prevent oil leakage and moisture ingress. Welding quality, gasket selection, surface treatment, and corrosion protection are important for long-term service life. External coatings are usually selected according to operating environment, including indoor, outdoor, coastal, or industrial atmospheric conditions. Key design parameters include tank dimensions, oil volume, pressure withstand capability, lifting and jacking arrangements, grounding provisions, radiator mounting interface, and accessory layout. For larger units, the tank may also support cable boxes, pressure relief devices, oil level indicators, drain valves, and temperature sensor pockets. Proper manufacturing control includes dimensional accuracy, weld inspection, pressure testing, leak testing, and surface preparation. During operation, regular inspection of tank condition, sealing surfaces, grounding connections, paint integrity, and accessory mounting points helps maintain transformer reliability.
